Bagels and Bequests: London Edition

Presented in collaboration with Queen's Gift Planning, join us for a special breakfast talk featuring will and estate planning experts , Artsci'17, and , Law'18, of Cohen Highley LLP. This estate planning primer will cover key topics, including:

  • the importance of having a will and things to keep in mind while writing or updating one;
  • powers of attorney for incapacity planning and substitute decision-making;
  • and supporting your family and leaving a legacy, including through charitable giving.

This morning event will include a light breakfast, coffee, tea, and juice. There will be time set aside for answering audience questions, which can also be submitted in advance.

Victoria Gordon

Victoria Gordon, Artsci'17

Victoria’s practice focuses on estate planning, estate administration, and real estate. Prior to her call to the bar, Victoria was both a summer student and completed her articles at Cohen Highley where she gained experience in all practice areas.

Victoria obtained her Honours Bachelor of Science with a Specialization in Biology and Psychology from Queen’s University and Juris Doctors from both the University of Windsor and the University of Detroit Mercy.  Victoria was awarded the Excellence for the Future Award for demonstrating the highest achievement as a student attorney in Detroit Mercy’s Environmental Law Clinic. During law school, Victoria volunteered extensively with Pro Bono Students Canada.

Outside the firm, Victoria enjoys spending time outdoors horseback riding, skiing, and golfing as well as spending time with her friends and family.

 

Josh Laplante

Joshua Laplante, Law'18

Josh is a litigation lawyer with a primary focus on estate, power of attorney, and guardianship litigation. His practice also includes wills and estate planning as well as advising and guiding executors through the estate administration process. Josh represents clients in defending and challenging the validity of wills, dependent support claims, estate accounting and administration disputes, power of attorney litigation, capacity litigation, rectification and variation of trust applications, and guardianship applications. 

Josh obtained his Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Waterloo in 2015, and his Juris Doctor from Queen’s University in 2018, where he was awarded the Queen’s Law Prize in Trusts & Equity. As part of his law degree, he studied international business law at Herstmonceux Castle in Southern England. He was called to the Ontario Bar in 2019.

Outside of the office, Josh is an avid golfer, and when not on the course, can often be found reading historical non-fiction, playing squash, and attending live music and concerts.

Getting There

Bike racks are located in front of Central Library on Dundas Place. The Central Library is served by several London Transit bus stops and you can in advance. 

Underground paid parking is available at and can be accessed from either King Street or Wellington Road. This garage has an accessible elevator that will bring guests within a few steps of the library entrance. The library offers parking validation for 2 hours at the main desk after 9am and additional parking time is available at a cost of $2.75 per half hour.

To access this event, please enter the Central Library from the Passageway entrance in Citi Plaza. There will be security on site to open the gate for registered attendees as the event takes place outside of library hours.
