Queen’s community features on 2024 Maclean’s Power List

An Oscar-nominated filmmaker, an executive tackling Canada’s housing crisis, and a Bank of Canada governor are among the 10 Queen’s alumni who made the , which ranks 100 Canadians shaping our country.

The recipients were divided into 10 categories including education innovators, health-care advocates, and tech entrepreneurs. 

Here’s an overview of the 10 alumni who made the magazine's list and the impact they’re making on Canada.


Dr. Peter Attia, Artsci’96 – Physician and author  

Category: Health Care 

Dr. Attia’s high-profile writing career focuses on helping people live healthier, longer lives. He’s written a bestselling book, , and his medical podcast, , has been downloaded more than 75 million times. 

Dr. Graham Carr, Artsci’77, MA’79 – President, Concordia University  

Category: Education 

As president of Concordia University in Montreal, Dr. Carr is tackling planned tuition increases for out-of-province students in Quebec head on, with a lawsuit that contends the move violates provincial and federal charters. 

Gillian Hadfield, Artsci’83 – Director, Schwartz Reisman Institute of Technology and Society 

Category: AI 

Director of the Schwartz Reisman Innovation Campus, the University of Toronto’s new AI research facility, Hadfield is a Schmidt Futures senior fellow and law professor at the university. Hadfield’s research into better aligning artificial intelligence with human values lands her on Maclean’s list. 

Mary Langley, Artsci’15 – Co-Founder, Switch Health 

Category: Health Care 

Langley helped launch Switch Health in 2020 to produce COVID-19 at-home test kits. Now the company has released two more game-changing testing products: the world’s first ever at-home HPV test kit for women and an at-home diabetes diagnostic test kit. 

Dr. Tiff Macklem, Artsci’83 – Governor, Bank of Canada  

Category: Housing 

As governor of the Bank of Canada, Dr. Macklem has navigated turbulent economic waters since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, tackling issues like inflation and interest rates. 

Diana Matheson, MBA’23 – Project 8 Sports 

Category: Sports 

Matheson is a retired soccer player who represented Canada at three Summer Olympics, earning two bronze medals. Now she’s planning to launch an eight-team women’s soccer league in Canada by 2025 and has secured sponsorships from  Air Canada, CIBC, DoorDash, and Canadian Tire. 

Gabriel Miller, Artsci’99 – CEO, Universities Canada 

Category: Education 

Miller, who was named the new CEO of Universities Canada in March, takes on the post during a challenging period for the higher-ed sector. 

John Redfern, Artsci’81 – CEO and President, Eavor Technologies Inc Category: Climate 

Redfern’s Calgary-based company is completing a $325-million subsurface radiator project in 2024. When complete, the company hopes to show the world the potential of clean, geothermal energy to address increasing global energy needs. 

Gaetan Royer, MPL’87 – CEO, Massive Canada 

Category: Housing 

Royer’s company, Massive Canada, just completed a 91,000 square-foot plant in British Columbia to build prefabricated apartment buildings and address Canada’s housing crisis. 

Celine Song, Artsci’10 – Filmmaker 

Category: Arts and Culture 

Fresh off two Oscar nominations for Best Picture and Best Screenplay for 2023’s Past Lives, Song begins filming her next project, The Materialists, this year.
