PhD student Arjun Sawhney has won the 2020-21 Professor Frank Pearce Essay Prize, awarded annually to a graduate student from the departments of Sociology, Political Studies, Geography, Philosophy or Cultural Studies with the best essay on the topic of radical critical theory and social justice. Arjun鈥檚 paper, 鈥淧olicing in the Age of Algorithms,鈥 examines the political and legal implications of policing agencies using artificial intelligence. The paper argues that if we are to understand the harms of algorithmic policing, we must go beyond a human rights framework and consider these algorithms within the context of settler colonialism.
