It is with great sadness that the Philosophy Department shares the tragic news that our former PhD student, Ryan McInerney, passed away on December 23, 2021. He was 33.
Ryan did his MA and PhD in the Philosophy Department at Queen鈥檚. He was awarded a SSHRC doctoral fellowship and was a visiting student at the UCL Institute of Education in the UK. Ryan鈥檚 dissertation won the C.G. Prado Outstanding Dissertation Prize, and was published as a monograph in October 2021 with Bloomsbury Academic. traces the deep connections between philosophy and education, arguing that we must use philosophy to reflect on the significance of educational practice to all human endeavour.
After his doctorate, Ryan returned to his home in Rainy River where he lived with his wife Sarah and two young boys, Atlas and Andr茅. He taught regularly for the Rainy River District School as well as holding a position as a sessional lecturer at Lakehead University.
Ryan was a multi-faceted, talented person, an accomplished hockey player, fisher and musician, and lover of the outdoors, family and the life of the mind. His kind and friendly presence, as well as his intellectual contributions, enhanced our Philosophy community tremendously. Our thoughts are with Ryan鈥檚 family at this very sad time.
