On April 8th 2024, Kingston will have its first total solar eclipse in over 500 years. Kingston will be one of the best places in Canada to view the eclipse, and we anticipate that many people will travel to Kingston to view it.
Queen’s is committed to leading community-wide outreach efforts for this event. We have ordered enough solar eclipse glasses to give to the whole Queen’s community and all elementary and high schools in the area. However, there is still a lot to do.
The Outreach Assistant will work with faculty and staff in Physics and across the community to create new educational content, and to curate and publish existing content from elsewhere. The Assistant will contact teachers, principals, school boards to arrange for outreach activities in schools. The assistant will also work to create information that Queen’s educators can use to help the community to learn about the total solar eclipse, and to witness it safely.
We are looking for a student curious about astronomy and the eclipse. We are looking for an effective communicator, who can work with professors to create educational content for a wide range of students – from adults to children. We want someone who can talk to a large number of people in the community to let them know about our outreach efforts. The student need not be an expert in astronomy, but should be enthusiastic to learn about it.
The assistant will learn techniques of effective communication from the supervisors. They will learn to create outreach content, work to update and design web pages, presentations and documents. The assistant will learn to create a network of teammates and stakeholders for a large project.
The job is 16 weeks long during summer 2023. Salary is $17.17/hour for 35 hours/week. The department has applied to the Canada Summer Jobs program, so applicants must be Canadian citizens, permanent residents, or refugees.
