The French Studies department is seeking Undergraduate Teaching Assistants to support various online French Courses in Fall Term 2024 and Winter Term 2025.

FREN 118/3.0 Communication and Culture III (Low-Intermediate French) (WINTER Term)
In addition to learning the essential grammar rules of the A2 level, students will learn to listen and respond to short written and audio texts relating to daily life; write short grammatically accurate texts that solve everyday problems; communicate orally about familiar topics and learn to describe the cultures of French speaking countries.
This course is in session from Jan 6, 2025 – Apr 23, 2025.
Duties may include:
- grading assignments,
- facilitating online discussion forums,
- leading breakout room discussions, and
- being available online to assist students with course work.
More specific expectations will be covered at the beginning of the term.
Job Requirements
As these courses are conducted in French, a B2 (solidly intermediate) level of French in speaking and writing is required to serve as TA.
The primary purpose of these positions is to support undergraduate teaching in an online course. Some training and preparation is needed before the start of the course. Candidates must be prepared to work outside of the regular 9-5 work week.
Excellent communication skills are essential, as is computer proficiency and ability to work closely with undergraduate students. Successful candidates will be expected to have continuous access to high-speed internet in order to provide prompt online advice and electronically monitor the progress of students.
Previous experience with online courses, familiarity with an online learning management platform such as onQ, Brightspace/Desire2Learn, and videoconferencing software (Blackboard Collaborate, Zoom, etc.) is an asset.
Contract Hours and Hiring
Positions will be offered only if course enrolment allows. The hours in the TA contract will be determined based on actual course enrolment, established close to the start of the term.
Approximate hours range between 51 and 85, depending on the course.
The Department of French Studies will contact and offer employment to the available TAs in the order they were submitted, as the enrolment increases.
