Steven Liss accepts position at Ryerson

Queen鈥檚 Principal Daniel Woolf announced today that Steven Liss, Vice-Principal (Research), has accepted the position of vice-president (research and innovation) at Ryerson University in Toronto. Dr. Liss will step down as vice-principal (research) as of Feb. 28, 2017 and leave the university on March 31, 2017.

鈥淯nder Dr. Liss' leadership, Queen鈥檚 strengthened its reputation as one of the leading research-intensive universities in Canada,鈥 Principal Woolf says. 鈥淲hile his passion and dedication will be missed here at Queen鈥檚, I would like to congratulate Dr. Liss and wish him all the best in his new role at Ryerson.鈥

During his tenure, Dr. Liss led the renewal of Queen鈥檚 Strategic Research Plan, which contributed to the enhancement of research prominence in terms of diversifying sources of funding, recruiting and retaining talent, and expanding cutting-edge facilities and infrastructure.

Dr. Liss positioned Queen鈥檚 for numerous research successes, including investments in major national research platforms and networks, a Canada Excellence Research Chair, and a Canada First Research Excellence Fund award. He also spearheaded efforts to raise the profile of Queen鈥檚 research through a variety of initiatives, including the launch of (e)AFFECT magazine.

John Fisher (Biomedical and Molecular Sciences) has agreed to serve as interim vice-principal (research), for the period March 1, 2017 to Dec. 31, 2017. A full search for a permanent replacement will be launched in early spring 2017 to allow for the recruitment process to attract the widest possible pool of candidates.

Dr. Fisher is currently an associate vice-principal (research) at Queen鈥檚, as well as the director of research in Queen鈥檚 Faculty of Health Sciences. His research focuses on the physiologic genomics of cardiopulmonary autonomic control in health and disease.
