The semester is coming to an end, and many Queen’s students will be moving on to their next steps and moving out of their current living space. Many may have household items they no longer need, and Queen’s is providing an opportunity for them to pass those goods along to others and keep their move sustainable.

The Second-hand Shuffle takes place April 28-30 in the Rideau Building parking area on campus (207 Stuart St.). Queen’s students are invited to donate gently used items for other students or community members to take for free. The Second-hand Shuffle is organized by the Queen’s Off-Campus Living Advisor in partnership with Facilities, the AMS, and other campus groups.

“Last year we helped find new homes for more than 4,800 items through this event – about 19,600 kilograms worth of goods,” says Mary Ann Tierney, Off-Campus Living Advisor in Student Affairs. “Moving has the potential to create a lot of waste, but we’re turning that into an opportunity to practice sustainability and support the broader community at the same time.”

Local non-profit organizations will be on hand to take donations that help them fulfill their mission. The , which provides necessities to those in need, attended last year and plans to come again this year.

“The donations we received last year really helped us support the people who turn to us for help,” says Judy Fyfe, executive director, St. Vincent de Paul Society of Kingston. “It’s great to see the community spirit of the Queen’s students who take the time when they’re moving out to make sure their household items can continue to be useful to people in Kingston.”

Students are encouraged to contribute a wide variety of household items to the event, including furniture, small appliances, kitchenware, electronics, office supplies, clothing, linens, and non-perishable food items. Only items that are functioning and unsoiled will be accepted. Community members are welcome to attend and take items, but donations will be accepted from students only.
