John R. Merrick

In regard to my post-Queen鈥檚 life, my career spanned 31 years as a History/Social Science teacher with the former Scarborough Board of Education (now Toronto District School Board) at Birchmount Park C.I., Sir Oliver Mowat C.I. and West Hill C.I. from 1974 to 2006, followed by another 9 years as a supply teacher, holding leadership positions as Assistant Head of History, Head of History and Social Science Curriculum Leader.

It was often challenging, but richly rewarding, to educate and hopefully inspire high school students about ancient and modern history (Egyptian, Greek and Roman, European, American, Canadian, Chinese and Russian) in addition to teaching courses in Canadian and American politics, anthropology, psychology, sociology and world religions with some boys鈥 physical education thrown in occasionally. As you can well see, being a high school teacher required one to be an academic 鈥済eneralist鈥 in order to manage the curricula demands.

Unquestionably, my Master鈥檚 Degree from Queen鈥檚 afforded me the academic knowledge and skill to be the best classroom teacher I possibly could be for which I am most grateful having the opportunity to study my beloved academic field at Queen鈥檚 eminent, scholarly and erudite Department of History.
