Graduate History Students' Association

The GHSA has a dual mandate: to foster collegiality among history graduate students and to advocate on their behalf. To this end the GHSA organizes social and professional development events for history graduate students and represents their interests at a number of committees and groups in the Department of History and at Queen鈥檚 University. Membership is free: all graduate students enrolled in the Department of History are considered members of the GHSA.

Selected Professional Development Events

  • The McGill-Queen鈥檚 Graduate Conference in History (first held in 2004, this event rotates annually between Queen鈥檚 and McGill)
  • TF/TA Talks (sharing strategies for teaching and learning)
  • Writing groups
  • Workshops and presentations on topics such as equity, positive space, preparing for your defence, finding a post-doctoral position, etc.

Selected Social Activities

  • Orientation BBQ (September)
  • Holiday Party (November)
  • Coffee Socials
  • Pub Nights
  • Book Sales (usually held in September and March, and our major fundraisers to support other activities)
  • Group trips to sporting and cultural events. As interests and demands change and shift, new events are always added to the roster!

Selected Committees and Groups

GHSA members are also selected to represent history graduate students to a number of external committees and groups, including:

  • History Departmental Meetings
  • Departmental Graduate Committee
  • Departmental Appointments Committee
  • Nugent Fund Allocation Committee
  • PSAC 901
  • The Society of Professional and Graduate Students

The GHSA meets each month during the academic year. All history graduate students are welcome to attend GHSA meetings and activities. Some positions are elected in the spring, while others are chosen in September, so there is always room for new students to get on board!
